Easy Mercury Glass Makeover

I’m jumping on the mercury glass bandwagon and giving it a try! It looks easy enough that even I could do it. And if I can do it, you can do it too!I have this glass dolphin that I got as a gift many years ago. I’ve always liked the beach and anything coastal, but the dolphin just didn’t quite fit in with everything else in my house. Especially the bright, royal blue color. I’m more of a relaxing aqua kinda girl. When I decided to give this mercury glass a go, I made the dolphin my guinea pig. Here’s a quick rundown of how this dolphin went from the outcast to the cool kid on the block. All you will need is vinegar, water, a spray bottle, some paper towel, and Looking Glass spray paint by Krylon.

First mix vinegar and water in your spray bottle using equal parts vinegar and water. You won’t need much. Maybe like a 1/2 cup total. I gave my dolphin a bath first to get rid of any dust or other dirt/grime that may have been on it. Then I sprayed the dolphin with the vinegar/water mixture. I followed it up by spraying the dolphin with the looking glass spray paint. The vinegar/water mixture should be beaded up under the spray paint. It may drip down and leave a streak which is totally fine. Let it dry for a few minutes before blotting away the vinegar/water with the paper towel that is beaded up on the dolphin. I repeated this process until I was happy with the look of the new and improved mercury glass dolphin.  Once you’re happy with the look, let it dry for a few hours and you’re done! I liked being able to see some of the original blue popping through. Gave it some extra character. If you don’t want your old color or a different color showing through, just paint it first, let that completely dry and follow the same steps for a mercury glass look.

This makeover was so quick and easy! I’m already looking for my next mercury glass victim….err, makeover! Nothing is safe now.
